Our STEM-based educational program caters to both for both Lower Elementary K-2 and Upper Elementary 3-5. Our STEM curriculum was developed by educators in accordance with State of Wisconsin standards.
The program is presented at the museum Depot in East Troy and involves:
- A short talk on the subject of electricity and motion (15 to 20 min).
- A grade-appropriate hands-on activity.
- A 30 minute ride on one of our vintage trolleys to Indianhead Park in Mukwonago. Talk on the way is about the history of the trolley line, and perhaps wildlife if any is seen.
- Lunch at the park (30-40 min). Students to bring own lunch. Restrooms available at the park.
- A 30 minute ride back to the East Troy Depot, focusing on the trolley car and how it works.
- Optional history-based scavenger hunt at Depot, additional discussion about history.

OTHER PROGRAMS
We can work with you regarding what you would like to do. Our members can talk on subjects such as the history of our line or electric railroads in Wisconsin, the history and features of our vintage equipment, how we keep them running, or a more general look at electric transportation. A trolley ride could be part of your experience, and we can offer a tour of our shop area and car barn, depending on the work occurring there on the day of your visit.
RATES AND DATES
The STEM and Docent History programs can be provided as part of an Educational Charter at no additional cost. However, we recommend contacting the ETRM charter manager (Email: [email protected]) as soon as possible to obtain the pre-visit materials to maximize the educational benefit.
The Educational Charters are offered between May 1 and Labor Day but other dates until September 30 may be available. The classes are held outside if possible and certain locations require walks of up to 3 blocks. Not all areas have hard surfaces and weather conditions may preclude outside scheduling.
We generally schedule charters Monday through Thursday as no other trains are typically on the line. However, it is also possible to schedule tours on most Fridays but we do run other trains that day at 10AM, noon and 2PM. If your group is smaller, we could possibly accommodate you on our regular trains.
ACCESS
All of our equipment is vintage or antique and built before ADA was a requirement. There are steps with railings to board each of our vintage trains (both trolleys and interurban cars). There are no restrooms on the trains for the approximate 1 hour-10 minute round trip ride. Accessible restrooms are available in our station in East Troy and at Indianhead Park in Mukwonago.
FOOD OPTIONS
As with typical field and educational trips, it is recommended the students bring their own lunch and drink. Outdoor picnic tables are available at the East Troy Depot, Bryne Park, and Indianhead Park in Mukwonago (the other end of the line). Please note eating and drinking is not allowed on the trolley and interurban cars.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Most of the trolley and interurban cars hold between 35 and 50 passengers. Multi-Car trains can accommodate up to 130 riders. Multiple trains can be arranged for even larger groups of riders.
